Rain

The cold Kandy wind ripples through my hair. Leaves swirl about randomly in the air while cradling the pink trumpet trees on the pavements to and fro. Few drops of water would gently splatter on to my cheeks. Holding my black umbrella tight with extra care, (to save me from any embarrassment caused by it being blown away by the wind) I’d scurry through the streets to the car. The street lights begin to light up, adding a warm ambiance to the cold and gloomy evening. It’s raining in Kandy. It’s beautiful.

Tuning in the favorite radio channel, I’d stare at the droplets of water that hit the window and flow their way down helplessly. The blurred lights of the vehicles glisten through those droplets like tiny crystals. The traffic is jammed. Wipers are busy on the windshield gushing away the water. And then the favorite songs start playing one by one on the radio. For a minute or two, I’m in my own movie moment thinking about my favorite person. The lights, the cold, the rain and the songs…they all contribute. The movie moment gets shattered by the honking of a few vehicles. Alright, now it’s time to get home fast, have a warm shower and sip on a warm coffee and hop to bed with a movie or a book. Yes, that’s what I want. So that’s rain for me.

On the contrary, I could see there sits a person by the streets. A homeless. Maybe in her mid 50s. Gathering herself some shelter with plastic sheets and boards. Her gown half soaked, but not forgetting to care for the stray dog that lay by her side. Who could she be? What may have happened to her family? Where are they? Maybe she left them. Or maybe they kicked her out. Could she be missing them? I’d ask myself all the questions and come up with assumptions, but I’m certain she must be badly in need of a roof above the head, some good clothes to keep her warm, and a warm satisfying meal. And she’d probably share the same with the dog. Yes, that’s what she needs .So that’s rain for her.
